Debt Relief Companies
Not all debt relief companies are created equal. Some are ethical and committed to getting you back into sound financial health. Others are just in it for the money, and will gouge you for anything they think they can get. Here are a few things to look for that may help you tell the difference between a savior and a shark.
- Does the company offer free information? A company that insists on being paid upfront before it tells you anything is probably hiding something from you.
- Does the company want you to make “voluntary contributions?” Any company worth its salt will charge you fees, that’s just the nature of capitalism. The difference between an ethical and an unethical company is that ethical companies are forthright about it.
- Does the company skimp in teaching you budgeting and money management? A debt counselor is like an oncologist, you shouldn’t look forward to seeing them again.
